How to Add a User Profile in Outlook 2000

If you have not read the page about Outlook 2000 "modes," please click here and ensure your copy of Outlook 2000 is running in corporate/workgroup mode before continuing.

Use the following steps to add a user profile to your computer:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click either the Mail or the Mail and Fax icon.
  3. Click Show Profiles.
  4. In the Mail and Fax dialog box, click Add.
  5. Follow the prompts of the Inbox Setup Wizard.

Click the mail icon in control panel to bring up this dialog. Click the Show Profiles button.

Here is the dialog box you will see when you click the Show Profiles button. If you have more than one profile, they will show up in a list here.

Click the Add button to bring up the wizard. On the first page of the wizard, place a check mark next to Microsoft Exchange Server. Do not place a check mark next to Internet E-mail.

Here is the second page of the wizard. Choose a name that's different from any profile name that currently exists on your system.

Enter the Exchange server name and your username on the next page of the wizard. This information will be provided to you by email when you sign up. Type shelley3 for the server name. You can supply your username for the  mailbox name.

Select Yes on the fourth page of the wizard. This will enable you to work offline.

That's all folks!

After you close the wizard by clicking Finish, you should find yourself back at this dialog box:

Choose the new profile in the drop down list, so next time Outlook starts, it will start with the new profile, and launch into Exchange Hosting Service.

Click the Close button and you're ready to start Outlook with your new profile.

Now that you have more than one profile...

You can have Outlook prompt you for the profile you want to use when it starts.

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Mail Services tab, click Prompt for a profile to be used, and then click OK.
  4. On the File menu, click Exit and Log Off.

This takes effect next time you start Outlook.

What not to do...

Many new users of Exchange Hosting Service try to add the Exchange Server service to an existing profile that already includes Internet E-mail service for their ISP or other POP3 mail provider.

This always causes problems. Don't do it. Create a new profile for Exchange, following the steps above.

Microsoft has documented the technical reasons why this doesn't work in Q245446 in the Knowledge Base.
