How To Create a Profile in Outlook 2007

Outlook 2007 is old now, and must be updated with service packs and patches from Microsoft Update before it will successfully connect to the servers. See Outlook Updates for details.

After updating Outlook 2007, use the following steps to add a new Outlook profile to your computer.

  1. Close Outlook if it's open.
  2. From the Start button, locate Control Panel and open it.
  3. Find the Mail icon in Control Panel. In Windows 7 and Vista, the easy way is to type Mail in the search box at the upper right of the Control Panel window. See screen shot below.

  4. Open the Mail icon. The following dialog will appear.

    Mail Setup Dialog Box

  5. Click the Show Profiles button (not the E-mail Accounts button). The following dialog will appear. If you have more than one profile, they will show up in a list here. The names of the profiles on your computer will be different from what is shown in the screen shot.

  6. Click the Add button. The following dialog will appear. Type a name for the new profile and click Ok.

  7. Click the check box next to Manually configure server settings and click Next.

  8. Choose Microsoft Exchange and click Next.

  9. See illustration below. Enter the Exchange server name and your mailbox display name or username. Your username will be provided to you by email.

The Microsoft Exchange Server name to type is MAIL.WEBVILLE.NET   The server name shown here will automatically change to something else and become underlined after Check Name is successful. The option box to Use Cached Exchange Mode must be enabled.

Type only the first portion of your display name or username and Exchange will present a list of matching possibilities. Less is more in this box. After Check Name is successful, these values will be underlined. But don't check name yet, there are more steps to do first.

  10. Do not click the Check Name button. Click the More Settings button.

Most Internet providers have firewalls, and that may become apparent at this step. If you are behind a firewall, your window may hang for a minute or so, while Outlook tries to connect to the server. It may return an error message to the effect that it could not connect to the server, as in the illustration. This is expected. Click OK. If you don't get this message, that's ok too, continue to the next step.

  11. After clicking OK to the error message, the following dialog may appear.

  12. If you get a dialog similar to the one shown above, click Cancel. An Exchange Server dialog like the one below will appear. Click the Connection tab page.

  13. Place a check next to Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP. Click the Exchange Proxy Settings button. The following dialog will appear.

  14. In the box labeled "Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange," type the following:

    mail.webville.net

Both options, On fast networks... and On slow networks... must be checked.

Under Proxy authentication settings, click the drop down list and choose Basic Authentication. Click OK on the Exchange proxy settings dialog.

  15. That should bring you back to the Email accounts window. If the server name and user name are not yet underlined, press the Check Name button. When the server name and mailbox name are underlined, they have passed the check name test and your configuration is good.

Add new email account dialog

  1. Make sure the option to Use Cached Exchange Mode is selected and click Next.

  2. Click Finish to dismiss the congratulations page of the Wizard. You should see the dialog listing all your Outlook profiles, (different names from these shown here) and the new one you just created should be listed there. Just below that list of profiles, click the option to Always use this profile and select your new profile in the drop down list, so Outlook will use it when starting.

  1. When starting Outlook with your new profile, it is important that your user name is entered correctly, as well as your password.
